Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection and inflammation of the female reproductive organs. It can scar the tubes that carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus which can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain and other problems. PID is the most common preventable cause of infertility in the United States. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common causes, but other bacteria can also cause PID.

Symptoms of PID

Most women with PID have no symptoms. If you do, they may include:
  • an abnormal vaginal discharge
  • irregular periods, or having heavier periods than usual
  • pain in the lower part of your abdomen (tummy), which may spread to your legs
  • uncomfortable or painful sex
  • pain when urinating
  • Vaginal discharge that is usually yellow or green and may have an unpleasant smell.
  • Chills, high fever, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
  • feeling sick or vomiting

Medical Treatment
Your health care provider will start antibiotic therapy for PID as soon as the diagnosis is made. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are suspected and treated in every person. Pain medication and IV fluids will be given if you need them.
