Each year, more than 440,000 Americans die of tobacco-related disease, accounting for 1 in every 5 deaths. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 30% of cancer deaths annually in the United States.

According to the 2004 Surgeon General's Report, The Health Consequences of Smoking, tobacco causes an increasing number of deaths from cancers of particular concern to women, including lung, cervical, and ovarian. Scientific evidence also suggests a causal relationship between smoking and colorectal adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer. Epidemiological studies exploring a possible link between smoking and breast cancer have yielded inconclusive results, although animal, human biomarker, and in vitro cellular studies strongly suggest that tobacco carcinogens may be involved in breast cancer development. Tobacco use also causes leukemia and cancers of the bladder, esophagus, kidney, larynx, oral cavity, pancreas, and stomach.

Cancer that forms in tissues of the pharynx (the hollow tube inside the neck that starts behind the nose and ends at the top of the windpipe and esophagus). Throat cancer includes cancer of the nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose), the oropharynx (the middle part of the pharynx), and the hypopharynx (the bottom part of the pharynx). Cancer of the larynx (voice box) may also be included as a type of throat cancer. Most throat cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in thin, flat cells that look like fish scales). Also called pharyngeal cancer.

Testicular cancer is much less common than prostate cancer, accounting for approximately 1 percent of all cancers in American men. This type of cancer is most often found in men ages 15 to 35. A few studies have suggested a link between vasectomy and an increased risk of testicular cancer, but the evidence is inconsistent and the association in some studies may be due to factors other than vasectomy. It is also possible that the vasectomy procedure increases the rate at which an existing, but undetected, testicular cancer will progress. At this time, it is believed that there is either no association or a weak association between vasectomy and testicular cancer, although more research is needed before definitive conclusions can be reached.

Men concerned about prostate cancer or testicular cancer should talk to their doctor about the symptoms to watch for and an appropriate schedule for checkups.

Cancer of the corpus uteri, or endometrium, is the fourth most common invasive cancer among women in the United States. It is estimated that in 2007, 39,080 new cases of endometrial cancer will be diagnosed and 7,400 women will die of the disease. The incidence of endometrial cancer declined from 1975 to 1988, increased slightly over the next decade, and again has begun to decline. The mortality rate has remained stable since 1992. Although average incidence rates for white women were higher than for black women, the mortality rate for black women was nearly double that of white women.

An indolent (slow-growing) cancer that forms in cells that make hormones in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract (the stomach and intestines). It usually occurs in the appendix (a small fingerlike pouch of the large intestine), small intestine, or rectum. Having gastrointestinal carcinoid tumor increases the risk of forming other cancers of the digestive system.

A new drug pair may assist defending colorectal cancer, and the influential new cancer drug Sutent might also slow the succession of liver cancer. So conclude two studies presented Monday at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in San Diego.

In the first study, researchers found that a two-drug routine made up of low doses of difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) plus sulindac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), lessen the risk of colorectal adenomas by up to 95 percent. Colorectal adenomas are a near the beginning sign of colon cancer.

A new study proposes that women who drink many alcoholic drinks a day could increase their risk of developing a widespread kind of breast cancer by as much as 50 per cent. The study found that the more alcohol a woman drinks, the larger her likelihood of developing tumors, which are positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors.

"This suggests that a woman should evaluate consumption of alcohol along with other known breast cancer risk factors, such as the use of hormone replacement therapy," said Jasmine Lew, who led the research for the U.S. National Cancer Institute, in a release.

Any of a large group of cancers of the immune system. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas can occur at any age and are often marked by enlarged lymph nodes, fever, and weight loss. There are many different types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which can be divided into aggressive (fast-growing) and indolent (slow-growing) types and can be classified as either B-cell or T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas include Burkitt lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, immunoblastic large cell lymphoma, precursor B-lymphoblastic lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma. T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas include mycosis fungoides, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma. Lymphomas related to lymphoproliferative disorders following bone marrow or stem cell transplantation are usually B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Prognosis and treatment depend on the stage and type of disease. Also called NHL.

After filtering throughout the DNA of more than about 60,000 people, the scientists highlighted a bunch of genetic differences on the human genome, which could actually increase a person's possibility of getting lung cancer by as much as 80 per cent. Experts also stated that the trio of studies would certainly assist scientists comprehend how tobacco smoking could further trigger lung cancer and might answer the challenge of why some pack-a-day smokers would never grow the disease.

Cancer that forms in tissues of the bladder (the organ that stores urine). Most bladder cancers are transitional cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in cells that normally make up the inner lining of the bladder). Other types include squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that begins in thin, flat cells) and adenocarcinoma (cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). The cells that form squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma develop in the inner lining of the bladder as a result of chronic irritation and inflammation.
